Counselling for Children and Young people; what to expect 

It can feel dauting for a parent trying to choose a therapist for your child or teen.  

 As a fully qualified Child and Young persons (CYP) therapist I work with both parents and Child/ young person to ensure a warm, friendly, confidential and supportive therapy environment.

I have over 8 years experience working as a school therapist in schools across Wales.

I have also worked with social services and foster carers. I have a full enhanced up to date DBS check and I attend a monthly supervision to ensure safe and ethical practise at all times.

What to expect

Parents are invited to attend an initial assessment with their child/ young person, encouraged to ask questions and to discuss what is involved in the therapy process. This can be done remotely or face to face. I will talk to your child/ young person about what they would like out of sessions and we collaborate together to identify how this can be achieved.

I use a combination of creative and play techniques (depending age and development) to enable your child/ teen to feel at ease and this often aids with communication.

CBT with young people CBT is adapted for children and young people in a way that is age appropriate for them. It works on the same principal; help them to identify thoughts, feelings and behaivours and how to use different techniques to change current problems and issues. Confidentially is at the forefront of my work with children and young people; all young people have the right to a confidential safe space, enabling them to talk and work through what is going on for them.

At all times I will discuss with your Child that I may need to discuss certain (such as safety) issues with parent/ doctors or school but I will always agree this with them at the time.

I do encourage your child to discuss certain topics and techniqs with parents to enable parents and family to support them outside of therapy; I will always ask your child’s permission to do this.
